Admission

Administrative Practices
Worsham College of Mortuary Science strictly adheres to a personnel policy for faculty, and an admissions policy for students, that assures equal consideration without regard to race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, disability, marital status or veterans status.

Admissions Procedures
Applications for admission may be made at any time, however, enrollments will commence only in March and September. Each student must supply the Registrar’s Office with a completed application, an official college transcript, (students with less than a 2.0 may be admitted on a probationary basis), a completed Health Certificate, two Letters of Recommendation, a brief essay describing the reason for selecting funeral service as a profession, and an application fee of $30.00. Thirty days prior to registration a tuition deposit of $250.00 is required. Failure to comply with this request will be taken as an indication that the applicant does not intend to enroll and the application will be canceled. If for some reason, the student is not accepted or cannot enroll the deposit will be refunded. Registration may be completed only on specified days immediately prior to the beginning of classes. These dates will be announced to each accepted student several weeks prior to registration.

Worsham College does not permit students to enroll more than two weeks after the beginning date for a given class.

Admission Requirements
Those students intending to practice in the state of Illinois are required to obtain thirty semester hours of college to include, a minimum of twenty hours of liberal arts and/or sciences, and a maximum of ten hours of electives. Students attending a college based upon quarter hours, instead of semester hours, are required to obtain forty-five quarter hours of college, consisting of a minimum of thirty hours of liberal arts and/or sciences, and a maximum of fifteen hours of electives.

Upon completion of mortuary science college, an Illinois student must complete a twelve-month apprenticeship, during which time, the student will submit twenty-four case reports to the Department of Professional Regulation for approval. Upon successful completion of both the apprenticeship and the Conference of Funeral Service Examination Boards (the state board in Illinois and thirty-nine other states), the apprentice becomes a fully licensed funeral service professional.

Students intending to practice in any other state must adhere to the regulations established by that state. A student may either contact the College, or the state board for specified requirements regarding his or her state. A State License Requirement listing is also included in this Web site.

Students from outside the United States, must supply the Registrar’s Office with a translated transcript or statement from a recognized educational authority, certifying that the applicant achieved formal education equivalent to a high school diploma.
